We are proud to announce that the Meadowlands Area YMCA has been awarded the New Jersey Department of Education’s 21st Century Community Learning Centers Grant (21st CCLC) that will be used to extend the school day and school year and to provide remedial and enrichment programs focused on improving literacy skills at the Robert L. Craig School, Moonachie” says Joe Min of the Meadowlands YMCA. The grant award will enable us to greatly expand Moonachie’s out-of-school offerings to include school tutoring and homework as well as a daily before and after school five days per week, at no cost to parents in grades 4-8. This program is absolutely FREE. According to the New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE), the purpose of the 21st CCLC program is to supplement the education of students. The program aims to assist students in attaining the skills necessary to meet New Jersey’s Core Curriculum Content Standards and Common Core Standards. The Meadowlands Area YMCA will utilize the funding, which is subject to how many children participate employ teachers and tutors; increase access to STEAM Curriculum (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math), as well as recreational activities; expand family literacy programs at the Craig School and to create character education, anti-bullying and peer support groups; provide parent training focused on curriculum; and offer professional development to staff to increase reading and writing in all subject areas. The Meadowlands YMCA will implement NJDOE-approved activities in cooperation with the Superintendent, Frank Scarafile and the program’s Project Director, Mr. Phil Facendola. There will also be a summer program called “Making Learning Count” We are proud to appoint Phil Facendola who is a 42 year veteran of the Moonachie school district to lead this process. His community connections, experience and long standing teaching credentials makes Mr. Facendola the perfect choice to implement this program. The Meadowlands Y and the Moonachie Board of Education were thrilled to be notified that we were selected for this very competitive grant since only 8 districts in the state of New Jersey would be selected to receive the 2014-2015 21CCLC grant award. The Meadowlands Area YMCA, a provider of before and after school programs for over 35 years and the Moonachie Public School, collaborated throughout the spring to develop a comprehensive winning proposal to specifically target the needs of the Super storm Sandy stricken students and their families. “Our hard work, dedication, social responsibility and creativity will now provide access to the extra time and extra help many of these students and their families need”, says Jane A. Egan, CEO of the Meadowlands Area YMCA, This school program is the perfect companion to our Family Success Center, which was implemented last year as a resource and family strengthening gathering place. “We believe that children are natural innovators who should be encouraged to ask questions, explore, and work together to search for solutions. Today's students will be called upon to address the world's increasingly complex problems and that it is our responsibility to prepare them for that future. One way we do that is through regular, exciting, cross-curricular opportunities involving science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math - or STEAM”, says Frank Scarafile, Superintendent of the Moonachie School District. This FREE 5 year program is a home run for our district and we are so pleased to be able to partner with the Meadowlands Area YMCA and bring this valuable program to our community.
