5 Healthy Habits to Feel Your Best This Summer

Summer is right around the corner and you’ll want to feel your best for all the fun in the sun that lies ahead. You may feel a like overwhelmed at first if you don’t already have a summer health plan in place, but there are plenty of easy steps you can take to prepare for the upcoming season. All of these summer health tips can be done in 15 minutes or less and easily performed while at the office or home. No exercise equipment required. These tips are intended to get your body moving and your mind in a health-conscious state. When combined with a more formal exercise regimen, you’re sure to be feeling your best this summer!

1. Stretch First Thing in the Morning

Yoga has a long history of enhancing both mind and body with simple, yet effective exercises. Doing a few yoga poses first thing in the morning can help your body to open up and improve circulation, which will benefit your metabolism. By warming up your digestive system, it will help nutrients to move more easily through the body, resulting in metabolizing carbs and fats faster.

Sun Salutations are a great place to start. This yoga circuit works all of the seven major chakras, which will help you wake up create a sense of inner calm. Move calmly and thoughtfully through the poses mentioned in the Yoga Journal article here. In addition to awakening your body, yoga helps to de-stress, which is essential for proper bodily functions.

2. Take a Lap

If you work in an office, it’s easy to get caught up in daily tasks and have the hours fly by. Meetings, emails, and last-minute emergencies flood our minds with a sense of urgency, elevating stress and encouraging negative actions like constant snacking. Many studies have linked desk work to an increase in weight. Well, there’s an easy solution that will help all around. Taking a few minutes to walk around your office will not only help you to get moving but will help de-stress and focus more deeply.

Set an alarm on your phone that will go off twice daily to start. When it does, take a brisk stroll around your office, using the longest possible route with stairs and even the outdoor areas of your workplace. As you get used to the daily task, up the frequency. Not only will this make you feel better while you work but it may help you have the motivation to workout after your shift.

3. Water Works Wonders

When it comes to summer health tips, this is the easiest. Drinking water is vital to maintaining a healthy mind and body. Dehydration can have noticeable effects even if you lose as little as 1% of your body’s water content; increasing fatigue, reducing motivation, and making you feel lousy overall.

To set yourself up for hydration success, intentionally leave water bottles in places you frequent, such as your desk at work, nightstand at home, by the stove while you cook, on the coffee table in the living room, etc. There are some apps that can also help, such as Waterlogged and Water Drink Reminder.

4. Bring Your Own Lunch

A sentiment that can be applied across the board to healthy living is planning ahead. The health benefits of bringing your lunch can be significant. The caloric difference between an average food fast lunch to a homemade meal is usually staggering. Fast food meals typically contain high levels of calories, saturated fat, sugar and salt, which are bad for losing weight and for overall health. You’ll also save money!

The easiest way to ensure a packed lunch is to make an extra portion for dinner the night before. It’s that easy! For nights when you don’t cook, just toss together a simple sandwich or salad. Include some fruit and protein bars in your lunch bag and you’re all set.

5. Resist the Random Snacks

Everyone who works in an office knows that somedays you’ll walk in and a pile of sugary donuts, bagels or candy is staring you right in the face. Remember the Socratic quote, “Eat to live, don’t live to eat.” These are empty calories that will work negatively against your healthy mission.

Avoid the areas of the office where there are freebie snacks. Out of sight, out of mind. If you’re forced to pass through, stay strong willed and don’t let your coworkers eating habits influence your pathway to health. By consciously reminding yourself these are not a part of your eating plan, it’ll further cement your commitment to healthy living.

With a little effort and self-discipline you’ll quickly build the foundations for a healthier life. The simple act of making thoughtful choices can create the momentum needed to take your health to the next level. These five tips are a great start to having you feel your best this summer!
