With the rise of Coronavirus concerns, we would like to address a popular question: Should you avoid the gym during the outbreak?
According to Dr. Paul Sax, medical director of the division of infectious diseases at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, “The gym is not a place that’s necessarily riskier than other communal areas. I wouldn’t say there’s anything particular about people sweating that makes them more contagious.”
Surface contamination from objects such as weights or cardio machines has not been of much worry to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention during the COVID-19 outbreak.
By regularly disinfecting our entire facility throughout each and every day, nightly deep-cleaning, and with your help in wiping down equipment after each use, we are able to prevent the spread of sickness here at the Meadowlands YMCA.
There are also some other reasons why sticking to your workout schedule can help to prevent illnesses like the COVID-19 virus.
  1. Exercise causes an increase in the circulation of antibodies and white blood cells, which your body uses to fight diseases and help to detect and fight off illnesses.
  2. This outbreak can cause a great deal of stress and anxiety. Reducing your stress can help to prevent against illnesses. Exercise and other physical activity produce endorphins which in turn reduces stress.
  3. Exercise can contribute to more sound and restful sleep, which is essential for the body's restorative processes and will help to boost immunity function.
It may be tempting to push the envelope if you're are fitness fanatic, but it is important to stay home if you are feeling sick. This helps to reduce the risk of spreading any germs at the gym.
